Mac Spoofing Method

Changing MAC address or we also can call it MAC address spoofing will be useful in some cases, but we will talk about it later in conclusion at the end of this article.

Requirement:

1. Linux terminal

Step by step How to Change MAC Address on Kali Linux:

1. Open your terminal, and type

ifconfig | grep HWaddr

you will see your original MAC address, mine was 08:00:27:b2:4d:4b

2. To temporary change our MAC address, we need to turn off the network interface first by running this command

( ifconfig eth0 down )

3. After that we can configure the new MAC address

ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:02


you can change the MAC address using this hexadecimal format XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

4. Now we can turn on the network interface again.

ifconfig eth0 up

5. And the last we can check again our MAC whether it's change or not.

if we follow until this step, MAC address will back to default after we restart our machine. Go to next page to view how to change MAC address permanently.

6. Kali Linux was built based on Debian. In Debian all the network interface was located on /etc/network/interfaces.

7. We will configure the /etc/network/interfaces. In this tutorial I will use pico text editor, but you can choose any of your favourite text editor.

pico /etc/network/interfaces

8. Now we will add one line of script to change our MAC address permanently

pre-up ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:02

This script will be called on system startup.

9. If we want to restore the default MAC address, just add the # sign in front of script in step 8.

#pre-up ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:02

Conclusion:

1. Changing MAC address usually needed for privacy and prevent tracking in the local network about our hardware information(e.g: in public wi-fi network).

2. Some network administrator they make blocking rule in proxy or router by adding the MAC address. To ensure interoperability and preventing being blocked by the proxy or router blacklist rule, we can change our MAC address.

Install VMware Tools in a Kali Guest

Should you decide to create your own VMware installation of Kali Linux rather than using our pre-made VMware images, you will need to follow the instructions below in order to successfully install VMware Tools in your Kali installation. You can opt to install either open-vm-tools, or the native VMWare tools.

Installing open-vm-Tools

This is probably the easiest way to get “VMWare tools” functionality inside a kali VMWare guest.

apt-get install open-vm-tools

If open-vm-tools does not work for you, or if you prefer using native VMWare tools, begin by installing some packages that are required by the VMware Tools installer:

echo cups enabled >> /usr/sbin/update-rc.d
echo vmware-tools enabled >> /usr/sbin/update-rc.d

apt-get install gcc make linux-headers-$(uname -r)
ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/linux/
Next, mount the Vmware tools ISO by clicking “Install VMware Tools” from the appropriate menu. Once the VMware Tools ISO has been attached to the virtual machine, we mount the drive and copy the VMware Tools installer to /tmp/.

mkdir /mnt/vmware
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/vmware/
cp -rf /mnt/vmware/VMwareTools* /tmp/
Then, change directory to /tmp/, extract the tarball and start the installer:

cd /tmp/
tar zxpf VMwareTools-*.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools-distrib/
./vmware-tools-install.pl
Follow the prompts for the VMware Tools installation and you are done.

Lastly, to get rid of possible VMWare service errors, edit the /etc/init.d/vmware-tools script, and at around line 876, change:

# POSIX shell uses '!' for negation during bracket expansion.
# See http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/V3_chap02.html
IFS=.
set -- `uname -r`
to :

# POSIX shell uses '!' for negation during bracket expansion.

Once changed, proceed to restart the VMWare tool service.

How to install firefox on kali linux


1. Open root terminal window and type
    apt-get remove iceweasel

it removes iceweasel from the application menu

2. type echo -e "\ndeb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all main" | tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list > /dev/null

it adds repository for the installation

3. type apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com C1289A29

import the required gpg key

4. type apt-get update

update the required package

5. type apt-get install firefox-mozilla-build

install mozilla firefox on your sytem

6. type firefox on terminal window to start working with mozilla firefox

During installation, Kali Linux allows users to configure a password for the root user. However, should you decide to boot the live image instead, the i386, amd64, VMWare and ARM images are configured with the default root password – “toor, without the quotes.

During installation, Kali Linux allows users to configure a password for the root user. However, should you decide to boot the live image instead, the i386, amd64, VMWare and ARM images are configured with the default root password – “toor, without the quotes.

Kali Linux Dual Boot with Windows

Installing Kali alongside a Windows installation can be quite useful. However, you need to exercise caution during the setup process. First, make sure that you’ve backed up any important data on your Windows installation. Since you’ll be modifying your hard drive, you’ll want to store this backup on external media. Once you’ve completed the backup, we recommend you peruse Kali Linux Hard Disk Install, which explains the normal procedure for a basic Kali install.
In our example, we will be installing Kali Linux alongside an installation of Windows 7, which is currently taking up 100% of the disk space in our computer. We will start by resizing our current Windows partition to occupy less space and then proceed to install Kali Linux in the newly-created empty partition.
Download Kali Linux and either burn the ISO to DVD, or prepare a USB stick with Kali linux Liveas the installation medium. If you do not have a DVD or USB port on your computer, check out the Kali Linux Network Install. Ensure you have:
  • Minimum of 8 GB free disk space on Windows
  • CD-DVD / USB boot support

Preparing for the Installation

  1. Download Kali Linux.
  2. Burn The Kali Linux ISO to DVD or copy Kali Linux Live to USB.
  3. Ensure that your computer is set to boot from CD / USB in your BIOS.

Dual Boot Installation Procedure

  1. To start your installation, boot with your chosen installation medium. You should be greeted with the Kali Boot screen. Select Live, and you should be booted into the Kali Linux default desktop.
  2. Now launch the gparted program. We’ll use gparted to shrink the existing Windows partition to give us enough room to install Kali Linux.

  3. Select your Windows partition. Depending on your system, it will usually be the second, larger partition. In our example, there are two partitions; the first is the System Recovery partition, and Windows is actually installed in /dev/sda2. Resize your Windows partition and leave enough space (8GB minimum) for the Kali installation.

  4. Once you have resized your Windows partition, ensure you “Apply All Operations” on the hard disk. Exit gparted and reboot.

  1. The installation procedure from this point onwards is similar to a Kali Linux Hard Disk install, until the point of the partitioning, where you need to select “Guided – use the largest continuous free space” that you created earlier with gparted

  2. Once the installation is done, reboot. You should be greeted with a GRUB boot menu, which will allow you to boot either into Kali or Windows.
